Fire Club Visits South Onondaga Fire Dept.
The OCS Fire Club met with the South Onondaga Fire Department to explore emergency medical services (EMS) patient packaging techniques.Students had the opportunity to experience wearing and administering a Kendrick Extrication Device (KED), which is used to stabilize a patient's head and neck during an emergency situation.
In addition to the KED, the students also learned about the uses and functionality of different types of backboards. Backboards are essential for safely transferring and transporting patients who may have sustained spinal or other injuries.
The OCS Fire Club has grown significantly this school year, with 55 students from seventh through 12th grade signed up to participate.
The club offers students the chance to explore various first responder careers, including fire, police, EMS and military. Through hands-on demonstrations at various locations in the community and more, students gain valuable insights into these vital professions.
