About Wheeler Elementary
Snug in the middle of Rockwell Elementary and the Jr/Sr High School, the OCS roads meet at Wheeler School, where students in grades 3 through 6 are encouraged to learn, grow and participate in a variety of academic and social activities in a safe and secure environment. The faculty and staff of Wheeler School are committed to providing opportunities to every student so that they feel special and involved, as well as challenged to become not only successful students but successful citizens! With a focus on maintaining academic excellence, Wheeler School also provides students the opportunity to explore athletics, evolving technology, music and the arts. All staff members get to know each student so that the entire building is one community with a common goal of a rewarding educational experience.Safety and Transportation
To assure all students' safety, we ask you to please observe the following policies and procedures. All doors of the building are locked at all times. Please enter and exit the building at the main entrance. Sign in and out at the main office and wear a visitor's badge while visiting.
Bus Passes
When your child needs to be dropped off at a different location in the PM a bus pass must be sent into school in the AM. I cannot stress enough how important that the bus pass be complete with the name and address of the location your child is to be dropped off. Saying, "send my child to grandma's house or Susie's house" is not enough information. We need an exact address. Last minute phone calls to change a dropped off location are not allowed. A bus pass must be filled out and be within the district's boundaries and must be submitted in writing to the main office.Wheeler Band Program
Students at Wheeler have the opportunity in fourth, fifth and sixth grade to learn to play an instrument. Students in this program gain a deeper understanding of music through a variety of experiences. Students in the Instrumental Music Program receive a 30 - 40 minute small group lesson each week. Lesson times are on a rotating schedule so that students do not miss the same class more than once per month. Fourth-grade students have the opportunity to study flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. Students will participate in a fourth-grade band and perform during the May concert. Fifth and sixth grade students that study woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments will participate in the Wheeler School Concert Band. The Wheeler Concert Band performs three public concerts each year in addition to special performances. In the past we have performed at Rockwell School, at the state capitol concourse in Albany, the New York State School Board Association annual convention in Rochester, and for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Ensemble Festival where we have been awarded the “Gold Medal” distinction twice.
